SOMC has a great building, but the E.R. could care less. The desk has been unattended for up to an hour at a time, and unless the security guard (a really exceptional employee) is nearby, no one seems to care about the E.R. patients. I was rushed to SOMC after being extracted from a car via the jaws of life. For all intents and purposes, the EMTs and triage staff thought I had a broken back. One nurse (whos name escapes me) had to basically fight with convicted sex offender Christina Walker so that I could get fast-tracked to the MRI. Walker was too big to fit in the machine, but wouldn't take no for an answer. I asked for something to take the edge off of the pain, because I was almost positive I had a broken pelvis, but I was denied by the first doctor. As he left my room, an addict confronted him in the hall. She said she needed painkillers for her leg. He asked her what was wrong with her leg, and she admitted she had taken a fork up and down her leg just because she wanted painkillers. He wrote a prescription for an excessively large amount of Valium. An hour later, as I was literally about to writhe about (still immobilized on a stretcher, and unseen by any doctors), I finally managed to get a shot for pain, because I was literally about to go nuts (partially lacerated liver). There are a lot of stand-out physicians and nurses here, but there are far more incompetent, under-trained people on the payroll. On a subsequent visit, my daughter had a broken leg (minor fracture) and they wouldn't treat her. Instead, they trucked her to CINCINNATI. Never again.
